  • Wiring Killswitch with alligator clips (magneto)

I've seen this in a few bikes but never could get the lowdown on it. Wondering if anyone in here has had a magneto wired with n alligator clip coming from the mag ignition terminal post and what exactly would the rest of the wiring look like to make this work as on/off mechanism for the scoot?

I'm wiring a 69 shovel with a battery, as minimal as it gets with two lights

I don't know what you mean by alligator clip on the terminal. The terminal on the side of the mag is connected to the points side of the coil, so when you ground it that kills the spark. I would definitely hard wire a lead to that mag terminal (ring terminal, lock washer, & nut), and connect it to a convenient kill button that grounds the circuit. For the rest of the system, you just need a switch to disconnect the battery when the motor is not running, and enough hardware for the lights. The mag is TOTALLY separate from the rest of the electrical system.

Ok just what I was trying to understand( separate from the electrical system and the ground/kill switch part. So I guess some will wire an alligator clip instead of having it go to a kill switch. The kill switch is putting the alligator clip to the case or just clipping it to the head to cut the spark.

maybe this kill switch for your magneto; pricey, nice looking, does same as a $10 toggle switch:

"This switch is small and compact with a very simple one wire hook up.
Can be used with any single mag configuration.
        Includes detailed installation instructions.
The switch is OFF when PUSHED IN
Works with most all MSD, Mallory, FIE, Vertex and Hunt magnetos including even the MSD 44.

Don't take chances with any imitations, this could be the difference of shutting off a motor in an emergency!"

and several other styles on that page for reference, including one that states:
...magneto pull switch gets rid of the alligator clip disaster which can be the cause of injury or motor damage if one of the clips slips off"

HaHa. I have used a bent piece of hacksaw blade mounted on the handlebars with a knucke style insulated post/screw and wrapped with electrical tape. Nothin' fancy needed. You can also mount a piece of saw blade, or a feeler gauge, directly on the post on the mag, if it's convenient to get to.

For a really minimal system, with a mag and a generator, you can ditch the battery. Then you don't even need a light switch. The lights come on when the generator is making juice, and when you shut the motor off, everything goes off. Really simple. One small (cheap) capacitor to smooth the generator output would be a nice addition. (That is basically the XLCH system from the '60s.)

I've used a feeler gouge blade under the ground screw on the mag so I could just reach down and pish it against the side of the mag.
