Here's an update on my efforts to locate the exact spot that the final scene was shot. After talking with the state tourist people down there (who were totally ignorant of the movie, it's history or it's impact on the motorcycling public) efforts are being made by the state to erect a marker on that site . How fucking cool is that ?

About 5 years ago after attending a friends funeral at a little cemetary here I was walking around reading headstones and stumbled across a small one that was overgrown with weeds and had a small tree growing up against it. When I read it I was blown away to see that it belonged to two time medal of honor winner John King.

I couldn't believe that the grave wasn't better marked or maintained given his rare status of winning the CMOH not once but twice ! I started calling around and contacting people at the VA, the city, DAV, etc. I even located and contacted the John King Society whose members served on the ship John King which was named after him.

Nobody I spoke to was aware of his final resting place or the sorry condition of the gravesite. Once I got the word out the ball started rolling and today the gravesite is being properly maintained and honored by several Veterans groups and State and local organizations. It's amazing what you can do sometimes

Not much content in the citations, but for those not famiiar with old boiler technology it's worth noting they failed fairly often. Live steam from a burst boiler or pipe inside a ship's compartments would have been terrifying, scalding and blinding those it didn't kill outright.

          Example:

How about some actual content? Google and Bing Maps etc plus street view and satellite view options make showing whatever location you mean very, very low effort. Otherwise the post reads like a spambot.

                  This is a sweet thread!
I used to be Dennis' assistant. I waited until after he passed to see the film, and I saw it at a little theater put on as a sort of memorial to him. Bawled my eyes out. So much of him went into it and you could see it in every shot. It was like watching a wild home video.

The captain America bike (or a replica, I could never get a straight answer out of him) was in the garage and I got to see it daily. Here's a great article on the bikes-

Time for a rewatch! Thanks for the trip down memory lane, although I'm a little late to the party. I never get tired of hearing about how it made an impact on people. Maybe one day I'll get out there on whatever goobermobile I come up with for an open road ride.

It was so much fun. We had tea and looked at pictures and talked about colors and places that are cool.
One of those jobs where you think you'll learn a whole set of skills, something applicable to future success and some tools to bring to the next, better paying, fancier job. And then it turns out you learn nothing about a trade or anything that will be useful in a resume kind of way- instead you listen and grow and it changes everything you thought about how to be and what is possible. Miss him all the time.

I dug Dennis in Hell Ride as Eddie Zero. And now, when new people are introduced to me I shake their hand enthusiastically and say, "Holy shit, I thought you got killed in a big rig crash in '86 "

I just reread this and realized i never finished the story here. i took a trip to krotts springs and found the exact spot by comparing footage from the movie with google map images. there is a bayou on the west and a levy road on the east that pinpoint it exactly. looked for the cafe where the high school girls were and found it was torn down years ago and a napa store built on the site. talked to the counter man and learned a lot of behind the scenes stuff. for one, the locals hate the movie (they are just like the rednecks in the movie) and want nothing to do with it. another thing is the cafe (and the napa store) belonged to a local man named mr. david ( pronounced daveed) who was in the hospital dying at the time i was there. he also was the driver of the truck which was his actual personal truck. the shooter (who lived one town over) died years ago and owned the gun used. both the truck and the gun are still floating around down there lost in obscurity . last i checked no marker has been erected.
