Took the gasket out, punched a hole there, threw everything back together and the lifters pumped within 5 minutes of running the bike.

Just because they say it's correct doesn't mean it is.
Excellent. Glad I was able to help you get it sorted out. 15 years as a professional H-D mechanic is finally paying off! haha.

I know this is an old thread but this is a new issue for me.....91 1200 purchased as is with chrome cam cover. been running this motor for over a year with no issues...floated a valve tore it down and found the "wrong gasket" covering oil passages on the cam cover....I then realized the cover itself doesnt match up on a couple of the oil passages. How was this thing running and not have oiling issues?
so what do I do now? replace the cover and gasket with a 1991? Put it back together the way I found it? Any help is appreciated.

The hole you are pointing to is the end of a drilling that connects to the oil pump for return oil from the crankcase. That passage dead ends at the gasket surface. The gasket and cam cover should seal that hole off. So, you do not have a problem there. Good to question anything that you do not understand, or haven't seen before, as you learn about your motor.

          Yer golden, carry on.

Your motor feeds oil through the filter to the tappet bores, and then down to the pinion bushing through the cam cover. No oil comes directly from the pump to the cam cover like the older XLs.
